This year we have had a fantastic time together in Parramatta exploring many movement sequences as part of the Awareness Through Movement (ATM) classes. I usually do the ATM class myself the day before I teach it, and am always surprised how I can learn new things from an ATM that I have done a number of times before. I think one of the reasons for this is that as I do a different ATM a week and receive my own Feldenkrais sessions, explore and play around with movement sequences at home, I am also changing and slowly the Feldenkrais work is peeling off the protective/ inhibition layers (in my musculoskeletal system) that don’t serve me well. And so when I revisit an ATM, say a year later, my onion has peeled off a few more layers, and hence a new layer is revealed and there to experience the ATM. This might mean that I have more flexibility in my spine to experience something new, or that I am less fearful with certain movements and therefore able to take greater risks, or maybe that I just have a new way of playing with the movements and applying my attention. Who knows? The ATM when I come back to it is the same but usually different.
Three more weeks to go of our ATM class then we are on holiday through to February. It will be good to have a break but I will miss the regular peelings 🙂
